Beginning is hard. Think of the last time you started something new: a new work out routine, moved to a new city or started a new job. It’s a little messy, uncomfortable and can be difficult to find your barrings. But it is so WORTH it once you get going!
It has been the same journey for me with blogging. Which is why I wanted to write up this quick “How to” start blogging guide! I’ll cover 3 major topics: 1. Defining Your “Why” 2. Instagram and Website Basics 3. Networking in the Blogging Community. So without any further ado!
- Defining your “Why”
Everyone needs a why. My why is comprised of a few things- I love writing, I love creating and I love being a resource for fashion and inspiration for others! What’s your why? What will your blog provide for your readers?
You may be a new mom that wants to connect with other mamas out there, or you may be a fitness guru who wants to provide insight and advice for your readers! Whatever it is that you feel you do best and find passion in doing, should be your why.
2. Instagram and Website Basics
The first thing I did once I decided to start my blog was to in some way “brand” my Instagram and Website. On Instagram, I changed my profile from a personal account to a business account. This allows you to run promotions, add a business email and access your insights. Your insights are a great tool to gauge your engagement and growth. It will tell you what your reach, who your target audience is and what your impressions look like on a daily and weekly basis. I, of course, updated my profile picture, bio and username, as well!
The second thing I did was create a website that aligned with my Instagram mission and brand. I knew I had to use WordPress in order to monetize my blog, so, I dove into that, which was a little scary, I’m not going to lie! It ended up being great though because WordPress offers 24/7 customer service support chat and they are actually able to walk you through step by step, how to accomplish a task while building your site. If you plan on monetizing your blog with affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, ads or services, you’ll need to self-host your own website (which means that you own the entirety of your website). WordPress is a great option for this!
If you want to blog, just for fun and as a hobby, Wix is an amazing option. It’s incredibly user-friendly and offers a “drag and drop” type experience. I have built multiple sites on Wix. So, in all, what platform you choose to use, depends on your end goal with your blog: monetizing or as a hobby. Whether your in it to build your business or as a hobbyist, I commend you for BEGINNING and doing something you love!
3. Networking in the Blogging Community
Lastly, but absolutely not least, networking and connecting with fellow bloggers is a critical element in successfully starting your blog. Before I even began working on my new Instagram or Website, I reached out to a couple of my trusted friends who had some experience with blogging and digital marketing to get their take on it. And here’s what they said:
- Be yourself.
- Growth can be slow, so don’t get discouraged.
- Don’t compare yourself to others.
- Create relevant and intentional hashtags.
- Know your niche and produce quality content.
- Use a social media planning tool like Planoly to schedule your posts.
- Join blogging groups on Facebook.
- Have fun with it!
Blogging is a mystery to most, so connecting yourself with people that have been in your exact shoes before is so, so important. Most of the time, people want to help others, so I encourage you to seek and find who those people will be for you.
And lastly, I encourage you to just begin!
